Atadage

After liberating the country from the Colas, King Vijayabahu brought back the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Alms Bowl Relic of the Buddha. He then commissioned the Atadage to house the Tooth Relic. It is the sole surviving structure in Polonnaruwa from Vijayabahu’s period. The wooden superstructure has long since perished, but some of the original 54 stone, heavily ornamented pillars remain, together with one 9 ft. statue of the Buddha.
